Bookbinder and paper marbler Charlotte, aka Wainwright Bookbinding, creates bespoke books and boxes for a range of customers from her studio in Walthamstow. From bespoke wedding albums, to family bible restoration, Charlotte works on a wide range of projects for a range of customers from individuals to large brands.

After studying at Glasgow School of Art for a year, Charlotte moved to London and graduated in Graphic Design and Illustration from Central Saint Martins in 2012. It was on her Erasmus in Karlsruhe (Germany) that she fell in love with bookbinding (buchbinden!). She ended up working at a traditional fine bindery in central London for a few years, and then set up Wainwright Bookbinding in 2016.

“I have always loved the satisfying process of creating something handmade. Having a pleasing, tangible object at the end of the process is very rewarding. Like any creative process there are always learning curves of course! I am always learning, practicing and honing my craft.”Charlotte also thrives on the millimetre precision and mathematical formulas required in planning the structures of the books or boxes (check out how she plans her elements in this reel).  Although she has been bookbinding for 10 years, she only recently got totally addicted to paper marbling! Charlotte launched her own range of hand-marbled notebooks and diaries just before Christmas, which have been popular! Her premium range of handbound notebooks and diaries feature original hand-marbled papers, available personalised with a gold-foiled name or initials. Each is section-sewn and Litho printed onto 100gsm recycled paper.

“Marbling takes a while to really get the hang of, but there are loads of helpful books, courses and online resources. There are so many variables that can effect the outcome, it can be extremely frustrating at times! But when you slowly peel back the paper and reveal a totally magical pattern, the journey to get to that point is totally worth it!”
