Lauren Curl: Vibrant Torn Edges

Multidisciplinary visual artist and printmaker, Lauren Curl, creates screen printed compositions evolving from ‘found collages’ from urban environments. Her abstract works trace human activity in the cultural landscape, acting as a kind of urban archaeology.

Influenced by the décollage artists of the 1960s and the vibrant screenprints by Sister Corita Kent, Lauren’s recent prints take their origins from layers of torn billboard posters, revealing dada poems of today’s consumer society and inviting the viewer, as if cloud watching, to bring their own narratives to the work. Incidental marks and fragments of graphic shapes float across areas of chaotic texture juxtaposed by flat planes of saturated colour. These are united to form unique arrangements of familiar pieces.

Working predominantly with screen printing, Lauren’s abstract works are further embellished with physical textures which evoke a sense of touch due to their highly tactile surfaces formed by laser engraving and embossing.

Having graduated with a distinction from UWE’s MA Multidisciplinary Printmaking in June 2019, Lauren’s printmaking practice has been featured in Issue 8 of Pressing Matters magazine. She has also recently been awarded a residency at Neo: Studios and University of Bolton during Summer 2020 for which she is now planning a new body of printed work.

Lauren will next be exhibiting at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 7-10 November 2019.
