Marine Poiraton is a graphic designer, art director, and artist. As a graphic designer, Marine works on various projects, including design murals and signage, brand identities, design logos and brand naming, illustrations and patterns for textiles, web design, and creation and execution of a large range of prints (flyer, posters, brochures).
As an artist, her main practice includes painting (acrylic) and illustrations, and Marine has worked on a few collaborations with Québécoise Brand and French Artist, Shekra. “I have a preference for pastels on paper because I really love the texture we could have with few or many superposition,” says the artist. Marine works on murals too, and loves screenprinting and Risograph.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication (specialising in Silkscreen and Analogue Photography) from Brussels Royal Academy of Fine Art, and a Master’s degree in Graphic Design, Artistic Practices and Scientific Complexity workshop from erg (école de recherche graphique – Brussels), Marine has a broad range of experience in the creative field which continues to influence her practice. She also partook in an internship in 2015 at a Riso studio; “It was a beautiful experience and all the colours in my actual work are inspired from this experience (before I have some difficulties to work with colours and matching them so I was working mainly in black and white)”.
A stand out project for Marine was a typography/graphic design workshop she held with mentally handicapped artists. She tells us; “This residency brought me to an edition that aims to show the diversity of signs produced by the artists and allow a wider audience to step into their world.”
After more than three years working as an Art Director for Ellen Coopers Paris, a communications agency, Marine started working freelance full-time in order to offer her services of graphic design to her clients. This offered Marine a new adventure in independence and enabled her to bring her perspective on current communication.
Always curious about contrasts, compositions, matching colours and bold simplicity, Marine bases her artworks in the act of balancing abstract memories, language – which is a constant concern for her, whether spoken, written or bodily – feelings and music. She sketches a lot, sometimes using the sketches for a painting, or to clear her head and work out her ideas in a visual mode. Marine also writes her dreams down during the night, or sketches them to base a graphic or abstract composition around. She also enjoys taking photographs in nature, or of the architecture of the city to use in her paintings. Nature, memories, and language are the constant concern in her work. Marine also enjoys visiting museums and exhibitions to gain inspiration. She states; “I don’t have a favourite artist, but love modern and contemporary art. As a big fan of hip-hop music, sometimes I listen to an album and just sketch the emotion and beat that are going through myself.”
Looking to the future, Marine hopes to have more opportunities to work on murals, continue painting and drawing, and play with more printing techniques such as screenprinting and Risograph. She plans to work on more collaborations which push her out of her comfort zone, and encourage discussion with other artists or people who love art in general. Since she moved into a shared studio earlier this year, Marine feels like her style has evolved quickly and has opened her eyes in directions that she couldn’t see before.
