Patch Your Life Together is the printmaking output of Southern California-based, Marlee Bossert. A self-confessed “psychedelic cowboy”, Marlee’s prints are inspired by the landscape that surrounds her.

Having studied History, Literature and Culture at the University of Brighton, Marlee only began to explore linocut printmaking in June of 2020 after she had graduated. Mostly carving from soft linoleum, and occasionally wood, Marlee uses a wooden spoon to burnish all of her prints and Blick brand water soluble ink. She creates all of her pieces from her kitchen on a print-upon-order basis.

Recently, Marlee completed a project which involved creating all 12 of the Zodiac signs as vases with plants blooming out of them. “This project was a challenge for me in many different ways, but so enjoyable,” describes the printmaker. Marlee is presently working on developing her fine line and detail skills by creating smaller-scale pieces. In order to do this, she has designed a challenge for herself; to make 100 tiny stamps and print them over a layer of coloured pencil. She explains; “I am hoping that this will not only develop my detail skills, but also make me appreciate the imperfections of the printmaking process.”

Her prints are typically inspired by the landscape of California and the Southwestern United States where she lives. Through the printing process, Marlee also loves to explore the chaos that can be found in the calmness of our everyday. Every month, she creates a print in which half of the proceeds are donated to a nonprofit. “This ongoing project is a huge motivator for me, and for which I have created some of my most intricate prints for,” says the artist.

Going forward, she hopes to continue to develop her carving and fine detail skills. Marlee concludes; “I am self taught so every time I carve or print I learn something new. It is one of the things I love most about the practice”.
