Rachel E Millar

Rachel E Millar is a signwriter, gilder, and lettering artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. She specialises in designing and painting lettering by hand; large or small, interior or exterior, on shop fronts, on walls, and almost any surface. Rachel works somewhere between design, art, and craft, fusing traditional techniques with contemporary design. As well as commercial commissions, she also works on her own artwork and collaborations with a range of other creatives. Her own work experiments with colour and perspective in painting and printed form.

Rachel studied Graphic Design at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 2016. During her BA degree she had the opportunity to study at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, USA. It was here she was taught the foundations of hand lettering and calligraphy during an intensive semester-long course. With this knowledge she returned to Edinburgh and pursued signwriting as a career.

She started her own business in 2017 after an informal apprenticeship with Ciaran Globël of Globël Signs. She currently has a studio space in Mount Florida Gallery & Studios on the south side of Glasgow alongside many accomplished self employed artists and makers. Rachel regularly hosts workshops at her own studio space and at educational institutions such as Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art and the V&A Dundee. She has spoken at events in Scotland about her work, and enjoys talking about contemporary signwriting to a broad range of audiences.
