All SHE Makes

posted by Emily Gosling May 20, 2021

Social enterprise All SHE Makes was launched with the aim of redressing the underrepresentation of women artists around the world. The platform, designed by Wei-Haas Creative, was created by Svitlana Martynjuk, a Michigan-based artist who was born and raised in Rivne, Ukraine . She says she created All SHE Makes “when she discovered that women in the art world consistently struggle to earn their worth.”

The platform’s goal is to “offer a curated space to locate women artists from any corner of the world”, acting as a directory of sorts for global art organizations that might or “might not already support visibility for women in the arts,” says Martynjuk. All SHE Makes has recently collaborated with ArtGirlRising, SHOWFIELDS, Antipode Gallery, WWF (World Wildlife Fund) on their campaign to promote love for nature through art. It has also collaborated with a fine art licensing company to offer a few of its artists the opportunity to add additional income streams by licensing their work; and launched the All SHE Makes Scholarship Fund to help artists in need.

Last month, All SHE Makes launched its eponymous international art and culture print magazine. The publication, which is also available as a digital version, was designed by Lauren Brumbach, a Michigan-based painter and designer originally from rural Pennsylvania, who describes her work as “entirely wrapped up in all things colour, texture and story.” She adds, “My work is always seeking new ways to unpack and understand the simple things in life.”

The cover uses a simple image-led approach, with a photograph of cover artist Teresa Dunn framed by a white border and a all-caps serif masthead in peachy pink. The design acts as a template that’s replicated in the mag’s yet-to-be released second issue, in which the artist photograph is replaced with an image of the painting in the same simple rectangular frame. The masthead colour draws from the paint-like swoosh in the All SHE Makes logo, though the typography is markedly different, moving from a roomy sans in the logo to the modern, curved serifs of the mag masthead.

“I grew up in a sleepy little Pennsylvania farm town where people move a little slower, dinner is always at 5pm and phrases like ‘wie geht’s’, ‘machts gut’ and ‘was geht junge’ are not foreign. I was inspired to pursue a life in the arts by my family,” says the magazine’s designer Brumbach. “It was their dedication to passion, expression and beauty that inspired me to create.”

All SHE Makes says that while the organisation “primarily focuses on shining light on women artists in the art world”, it welcomes “non-binary people and anyone who is comfortable in our space.” The platform currently represents women artists from 30 countries and adds it “supports ALL women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, any ability, any education, any location. For our magazine submission form you might see us asking to self-identify optionally, and we use this to make sure we don’t overlook historically marginalised people.”
