La Bourgeoise Sérigraphe

posted by POP Members September 21, 2020

La Bourgeoise Sérigraphe is a screen printing studio founded by Iris Sautier, a former graphic designer from Switzerland. After working freelance for 10 years for companies of all sizes in Switzerland, New York, and Montreal, Iris permanently immigrated to Montreal in 2005, where she gradually made the switch from graphic design to printmaking.

Since the opening of her screen printing shop in 2009, Iris has been ever-extending her knowledge and offering of printmaking mediums. She first started screen printing on paper, using both water-based and chemical inks, then moved on to textile as well as specialised printing on plastic, metal and other materials. After a couple of years in the field, Iris began dealing with large format projects and took on yard printing in 2016. In 2014, she partook in a BFA in Printmaking at Concordia University, where she studied intaglio, relief and lithography as a free student, then completed a Masters in Printmaking (MA) at the Royal College of Art in London, UK (2016-2018).

After her return from England, Iris added an oversized inkjet printer to her equipment, allowing her to mix digital and screen printing and to offer high quality archival giclée prints on top of her other services. In order to feed her insatiable appetite for new challenges and creative routes, the latest addition Iris made to the studio is a 36×60″ Charles Brand relief press, and all the needed tools for intaglio and woodcut.

Iris’ studio has been training a growing amount of printmakers for the last 10 years, through 7 hours and 12 hours beginner classes. She also participates regularly in cultural events and live demos, gives talks to students from fashion and design schools, and occasionally takes on teenage interns to allow them to develop a perception of the trade. The printmaker also offers team-building activities for businesses and organisations of all sizes, using screen printing as a bonding activity for individuals outside of the art field.

Iris has a true passion for printmaking processes, and is eager to transmit her fervour to anyone interested in learning the trade.
