Sarah McCoy is the owner and operator of The Permanent Collection Letterpress + Design Studio, located in the Des Moines, Iowa. She designs and prints all of her artwork and letterpress printed work on her vintage printing presses. Sarah received an M.A. 2003 and M.F.A. 2005 from The University of Iowa School of Art and Art History in Graphic Design. In 2006 she graduated with a Graduate Certificate from The University of Iowa Center for the Book with a concentration in letterpress printing. She has been working for clients both big and small, local, national and international, with notable collabs including Madsen Cycles, PaperChase located in the United Kingdom, Paper Source, and University of Southern California. Sarah is also a full-time Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Drake University in the department of Art and Design.

Sarah has been actively printing since 2002, exhibiting work and leading letterpress workshops both nationally and internationally. Her most recent letterpress workshop took place at Association Typographique Internationale conference in Antwerp, Belgium, utilising laser cut abstract wooden pieces combined with typography called Printing with Bits and Pieces. Her design work has been published in varied artist and trade publications such as Random Spectacular: Interrobang: A Showcase of Contemporary Letterpress Works and featured in Midwest Living Magazine and Princeton Architectural Press. Her artist book work is included in many University special collections such as Yale, Wellesley, and Stanford.

Her current research has taken two varied approaches. The first includes writing and presenting on early colonial women printers, which will be included in a group of women-authored and focused essays in a forth-coming publication (Fall 2021) by Princeton Architectural Press entitled, They Were There Too!. Her second area of interest has always explored the communicative and visual intersection of mixing early woodtype with contemporary typography within a single poster composition. She is currently working on a series of posters to be forth-coming fall of 2022.
