OKNO is the creative side-hustle of UK-based designer Luke Matthews. One of his recent releases is a typographic Risograph print, Girls Just Wanna Have Pockets. The print is inspired by his participation in various protests over the past few years, either as a marshal or by designing posters, slogans, and logos. One of the most shared slogans from these recent protests has been “Girls Just Wanna Have Fundamental Rights”. “A clever and funny take on some well-known pop lyrics, but a line that has a real and important message behind it,” says Luke.
“I wanted to take that key messaging and update it slightly to still have that element of humour, but tell a different story about women’s oppression. Where are all the pockets?! We could go into a whole thing about why women either don’t have pockets or have tiny pockets (or worse…fake ones?!), but the conversation always ends in the agreement that it’s 2021. Sort it out.”
Pink on pink is the perfect combination for the piece, playing on and hinting to the iconic Cyndi Lauper pop image. Luke concludes; “This one surprised me, I thought it might be popular but it seems to have really hit a positive nerve with people”.
