Sarah Ransome | Moroccan Prints

posted by POP Members November 24, 2023

A trip to Marrakech in Morocco back in the Summer has inspired a new collection of works from linocut printmaker Sarah Ransome. She found great inspiration from the vibrant colours, patterns, food, and culture she experienced. However, it was a visit to Le Jardin Majorelle that sparked the idea for a series of lino prints.

Two of the prints in her Moroccan series include vases and cacti that she witnessed at the gardens. Sarah set the shapes in front of “moorish” tiles beneath the blazing Marrakech sun. Titled Jardin de Marrakech and Oasis Marocaine, the prints can be displayed separately or side by side as a set of two.

Whilst in Marrakech, Sarah also saw the snake charmers in front of the souks. This inspired the third print in the series, Renaissance Marocaine, which takes some of the imagery from the first two designs, but with the addition of a snake. Within the print, the imagery of the snake symbolises renewal and rebirth.

Renaissance Marocaine has recently been included in the Open Art Exhibition at Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park, Chelmsford, Essex. The Open Art Exhibition runs from 18th November 2023 to 25th February 2024.
