Ice Screen Printing: Painter Meets Screen Printer

posted by POP Members October 19, 2020

Rune Fallesen of Ice Screen Printing, and Simon Fensholm, a Copenhagen-based artist, have collaborated on a new series of prints. Simon was nominated for Artist of the Year 2019 by the Copenhagen Art Association, and as part of the celebration was asked to create a print. Simon asked Ice Screen Printing to help him produce the prints, and together they worked on creating 400 unique prints, in two different designs.

The prints were created during four weeks of testing and collaborating. Each layer was hand-painted and made into screen positives in order to develop the screens with the the artist’s touch. The team at Ice Screen Printing mixed the colours with Simon to get as close to his favourite colour palette as possible. After the first colour was layered down, Simon produced a custom layer of paint on the paper, making each print in the series unique.

Rune states; “We love working with the split fountain technique, which is using different colours of ink on the screen, blending them as you print for a unique colour blend on each print. In this case, we had a lot of fun with this technique”. The prints were made in five layers, with the first layer being a split fountain with the addition of hand-painted brush strokes by the artist. After printing the first layer, Simon would paint directly onto the wet ink to create unique details. The second layer of split fountain mixed blue and yellow to create a light and green blend, helping to separate the foreground from the background. A dark violet/blue layer was then added to enhance the details. On this layer one can see the silhouettes of the main character, the forest and other graphic elements being created. Next, a yellow layer was added to give extra texture and highlight the elements. Finally, and last, but not least, a secret glossy layer was added to make the prints pop and reflect in different ways depending on the lighting and the position of the viewer. “This layer makes the prints stand out and showcase the possibilities of screen printing, giving the viewer something to look at, more than just what meets the eye” describes Rune.

This artist collaboration has pushed the boundaries of both mediums. The duo worked closely together throughout the whole process, combining different techniques and knowledge within painting and screen printing. Rune concludes; “We tried to push the boundaries of our skills in these prints and at Ice Screen Printing we were super happy to work with the talented Simon Fensholm. We are super proud of the outcome“.
