Gradspotters Prospects | Lewis Brymner

posted by Robyn Pitts November 17, 2023

Gradspotters is People of Print’s distinctive new platform dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging talents within the field of print. We are currently inviting recent graduates to apply to be in with the chance of marking and establishing their presence in the industry. The programme comes with a heap of benefits including networking opportunities, personalised mentorship, and promotion across our platforms.

Each submission we receive at Gradspotters represents the bold ambition, dedication, and creativity of emerging artists. Below, we check out the work of one such applicant, Lewis Brymner, a UK-based graphic designer with a strong focus on print design. With a background in photography and an interest in the form of the book, his personal practice explores the two through design.

One of the awesome projects he shared with us is Woodhouse Ridge; a visual exploration of a small area of woodlands in Leeds, West Yorkshire between 21.01.23 and 31.03.23. Using methods of collecting such as photography, soundscapes, drawings, and objects, Lewis built a visual narrative of the place in book form. The series takes the viewer through a journey into the woods, with an edited sequence of work that fluctuates from light to dark in density as one goes deeper into the book. The piece is accompanied by a typographic response to the area and work by local Yorkshire artist David Armes, and comes as a removable insert that folds out.

With a focus on tactility and varying translucencies, the different elements in the book are spread across different paper stocks: The photographic work and soundscapes (hidden in French folds) were laser printed on Conqueror Wove 100gsm, the India ink drawings that symbolise the paths taken to make the work were screen printed on Shoji paper 45gsm, and collected items from the area were printed on tracing paper 60gsm.
