Lizzie King: Skate Around the World

posted by POP Members July 16, 2021

London-based artist Lizzie King‘s latest project was created to celebrate World Skate Day. The t-shirt, available until 19th July 2021 on Print Social, an online pre-sale platform that allows creators to sell their ideas in a sustainable way, is inspired by the famous skate parks of Venice Beach. Lizzie studied Fine Art sculpture at Brighton University, and upon graduating went straight into assisting set designers and prop makers. However, she was always drawing, and after experimenting with drawing on windows with Posca pens, she realised that this was her passion. “I’d never considered being an illustrator as I felt like my drawings were just doodles.Once I put more energy into it I was so happy to be able to make a living off something I’ve always loved doing since I was a child. Being asked to create a window for Nike was a dream come true!”

Today, Lizzie works from her shed at the bottom of her garden in Hackney where she creates her signature colourful and positive illustrations using tropical colour combinations, bringing sunshine to all corners of the world. Lizzie’s drawings, which reflect the influence of the “hours and hours” of cartoons she watched as a child, have been brought to large scale window displays, t-shirt designs, and digital illustrations for the likes of Snapchat and Adidas. She comments; “I used to worry about not specialising on one thing but now I love having a varied working week”.“London constantly gives me ideas, from colour combinations of peoples clothes, to carnival to playgrounds I take my toddler to. I get so excited when I start drawing something and bring in all my different passions, Greek columns, palm trees, gold!”

When tasked to create a t-shirt for World Skate Day, Lizzie “immediately thought of the world as a giant skate park”. On a visit to LA a few years ago she checked out the famous skate park on Venice Beach and loved the shapes that she witnessed. She took loads of photos whilst she was there and used these as a starting point for the shapes of the t-shirt design. “I have never been cool or coordinated enough to be a skater but have always loved the style and counter culture that goes hand in hand with skating,” says Lizzie.

50% of the profits of the sale of the tee will be donated to the Palestine Child Relief Fund.  Commenting on the cause, Lizzie states; “I was so horrified by the violence against the people of Palestine recently. My friend had just moved there with her toddler and partner so I was seeing first hand via her Instagram the devastation. The population of Palestine is so young and I wanted to help in a small way.”

Lizzie has recently purchased a second-hand Risograph printer, and is looking forward to setting it up and getting the experiments rolling. We can’t wait to see more too!
