Solace is a clothing brand started in 2018 by Sean Ramsey of Fort Worth, Texas. Having never touched a press before, Sean started screen printing for a local printshop in 2015 making shirts for bands and other brands. The monotony of pressing thousands of the same shirt evoked a hunger to push through the parameters he learned on press and create for himself. With originality and variation top of mind, Sean was ready for a challenge from the universe.

At work, he was tasked to run a test to see how the different mesh counts they had on hand would work with a shimmer ink. Sean tells us; “The screen was just an open box mesh, as I was cleaning out the screen I saw the colourful ink from previous jobs on the table below. Light bulb moment, this nuance illuminated a possibility for creation. The urge was to haphazardly put different colours into the screen and let the ink fall where it may; that’s when I made my first shirt.” Since then, Sean has branched out into other mediums within fabric and outside of, with plexiglass and wood being particularly fun adventured.

Approaching printing in this way has fundamentally changed the way Sean prints. “I have learned about different forms of printing, I was finally able to define what I create as mono printing. 1 of 1. Just like me and you,” says the printmaker. Sean aims to mix art, colour, and individuality when he prints. He prints on a 10 head m&r sportsman used for high colour and high quantity jobs at the screen print shop he works at. “I love the juxtaposition of using a machine designed for mass production of the same design for my single identity works of art. My quiet rebellion.”
