Dan Gonen

Based in Amsterdam, Dan Gonen is a visual artist whose practice mainly focuses on silkscreen printing. Dan uses this printing technique in a rather free way, printing by hand, and sometimes in combination with drawing and painting. His output consists of two dimensional works on paper and canvas, as well as wearable objects (body based art).

In recent years, the main focus of Dan’s work has been depicting everyday life objects in relation to time and place, memory and present. These graphic objects are printed as singular images or in repetitive patterns, inspired by principles of pop-art.

This is exemplified in a series of vintage t.v. screens featuring abstract compositions of colours, and again in a series of smartphone screens featuring images from historic and prehistoric origins (Egyptian coffin portrait of Fayum, dinosaurs etc.). The main interest in these pieces is the contrast between digital and analogue, current and eternal.

Dan began his artistic journey whilst studying Art History, where he was granted a scholarship in Poetry Writing. He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld art academy Amsterdam in 2005. During this time he also spent two semesters at the Vienna University of Applied Arts, where he specialised in the silkscreen technique at the university’s textile workshop.

Recently, Dan spent a residency period in Berlin, working at the silkscreen workshop of the BBK artist association. He plans to continue working with printing and other hand-crafted techniques, developing and further researching his artistic practices.

Dan’s work has been presented in various publications, exhibitions, and art projects in the Netherlands and abroad, including Kunstmuseum The Hague, Vorarlberg museum, Austria, and more.
