posted by POP Members April 5, 2021

Founded in May 2019 by Rita Vargas, Vargas Print Studio was born from the need to expand her printing space and the possibilities for maintaining a professional artistic activity in Finland, by promoting professional guidance, knowledge sharing through workshops and related events.

Born in Portugal, Rita is a professional visual artist and a doctor of philosophy in Art History, with expertise in artists-in-residence and contemporary art. She has lived and worked as a professional artist in Japan, Germany, U.K. and Azores Islands.

With over 10 years of experience of teaching printmaking courses, workshops, and activities, through Vargas Print Studio Rita wishes to maintain awareness of the qualities of traditional printing on contemporary art and its rules of conduct, honouring hand-pulled prints, limited editions, and the personal hand touch aesthetic that comes with fine art editioning. Focusing on providing specialist printmaking equipment and expertise in printmaking, Vargas Print Studio aims to bring a higher level of print knowledge to the region of Helsinki. At the studio, artists with or without printmaking experience, are provided with open and accessible printmaking facilities, affordable studio spaces, and guidance. Vargas Print Studio also runs a regular programme of specialist printmaking courses and other related activities exploring new models for non-commercial printing, including workshops for complete beginners.

Besides curating activities, Rita also delivers courses, seminars, and talks at various universities and art museums in Finland and abroad. She has been living and working in Finland for the past 11 years and recently moved from Jyväskylä, where she worked as a freelance artist at Ratamo Printmaking and Photography Centre, to Helsinki, in order to open a printmaking studio.Rita mainly works with printmaking media, light, art installations, and stone sculpture. She also curates and writes about artists from around the world, with special focus on Japanese, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish culture.
