Diane Bresson: Tangram

posted by Robyn Pitts June 17, 2019

A new exciting addition to our curated marketplace, Department Store, is Diane Bresson; a print designer and artist who combines traditional screen printing with digital techniques. Her work encompasses a range of media including wallpaper and video art for bespoke projects from interior design to exhibitions.

Diane gains inspiration from various fields but is particularly intrigued by how simple, elemental shapes can be built into more complex compositions. For her recent series of limited edition prints Tangram, she took inspiration from the Tangram puzzle which was studied in depth by Martin Gardner. For 25 years Martin wrote a column called ‘Mathematical Games’ in the Scientific American that explored the construction of puzzles, patterns and optical illusions.

Colour is essential to Diane’s work. Her prints are built from a few colours which she then experiments with by mixing printed artworks with digital forms and projections. In order to build shapes and colours together, Diane records new combinations of colours and gradients through photographs and videos which she then translates back into screen prints.

Her work combines lines and dots with solid colours, creating an innovative interaction. “I prefer printing without a precise plan and improvise along the way with stencils and patterns. Many things that I thought were mistakes ended up creating interesting visual effects” says Diane. The outcome was two ten meter long rolls that were then scanned and divided into separate prints. From this 15 different giclee prints were created, each one limited to 10 copies numbered and signed by the artist.
