Gloria Ceballos: Shores of Plastic

Gloria Ceballos has recently launched a new series of cyanotype prints created using found materials from the river Thames, mainly plastics. During walks by the river, Gloria was moved to do something about the relentless waves of plastic waste washing up on the city’s shores. “As an avid beachcomber and printmaker, it was only natural for me to begin collecting plastic from the river and transforming it into prints,” says Gloria.

Once in the studio, she placed the found objects on light-sensitised paper under the sun in order to create cyanotypes. Gloria describes; “At times I distributed the materials the way the waves would; at other times, the plastic mimics jellyfish, algae, roots or fruit, reflecting the infiltration of plastics into the natural environment”. Although aesthetically beautiful, the works point to the concerning profusion of these plastics in our environment. Through the creation of these works, Gloria hopes it will lead the viewer to reflect on their daily actions and highlight how “everything we throw away comes back to us (via the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil we grow crops and raise animals on)”.

Although Shores of Plastic is an ongoing project, Gloria is also currently working on an artist book featuring all of the prints. A portion of the sales of the publication will be donated to an organisation dedicated to reduce the plastic imprint.

Gloria is currently an artist in residence at Es Far Cultural in Menorca, Spain, and is also the founder of Nibu Letterpress; a sustainable letterpress studio based in London.
