Currently an HNC student at College, Jacek Ambroszczyk started his creative career back in 2021 when he applied for a place on level ¾ Art & Design. With some background in Photoshop digital manipulation and 3D sculpting, he had a yearning to learn new traditional aspects of art; “I feel that College was the best thing that happened in my life and allowed me start this beautiful journey of printmaking,” says the printmaker.

Printmaking, and specifically linocut relief printing, is Jacek’s favourite medium. This technique allows him to create complex designs by utilising his digital skills in the planning and development process. He states; “Carving a linocut is like Catharsis, it allows me to completely shut everything around me off and focus on the lino and the amount of joy seeing all my hard work paying of is really amazing”.

All of Jacek’s designs are created using Photoshop, where he takes photographs and uses his photomanipulation skills to create the desired final image, which he then separates into layers or halftones. Jacek prints each layer out and uses tracing paper to re-trace each one onto the lino, which he then carves by hand.

The massive transition between his works was when he switched from water-based inks to oil-based inks; “It felt a bit overwhelming at first, but once I have gotten the hang of it everything felt even easier and more organised than before”. The oil-based inks have allowed him to create more refined and even prints, which is clearly evident in his newer works.

As a very organised and clean person, Jacek has been able to adapt to the provided space as much as he can. He comments; “I might be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my work, but I think it’s a part of me that helped me develop my skills and allowed me to change one desk into a full-fledged carving, printing and cleaning studio.”

Jacek has learned a lot about different artists while developing his skills, but he takes the most inspiration from Salvador Dali, Tosin Oyeniyi, and Robert McSpadyen.

He has recently started working with screen printing; “Screen printing is like working with lino without the hours spent on carving, it’s amazing when you just want to push out your ideas and the amount of potential this printing technique has is huge”.

When asked about his future plans considering his printmaking career he says; “I have been accepted for the HND for next year and I am planning on refining my skills during that period, other than that I would love to gather all the required equipment for screen printing and have my own studio at home”.
