Official People of Print member Georgina Estill invites you to take a tour of her six by eight foot studio and workshop in the garden of her home in Robin Hood’s Bay. Georgina tells us all about the journey she undertook when setting up the space, the ins and outs of running her own studio and some of the amazing projects that were born and created in her small yet wonderfully equipped creative hub.
“My studio is a place where I can escape the rest of the world” Georgina begins. The studio is home to her first printing press; a refurbished Adana HS2 dating from the 1930s, traditional typesetting equipment, a number of lead typefaces, book-binding tools and screen printing facilities. The majority of her graduate work is conceptualised and produced within the space, if not at the open-access facilities at Crescent Arts in Scarborough or Hey Ho Print Co. in Saltburn.
“I set up my studio shed during A-levels and its facilities have gradually grown as I’ve honed my passions of printmaking into letterpress and screen printing” explains Georgina. She mostly inhabits the space alone, but occasionally opens it up for 1-to-1 workshops. “The key to operating from a small space at home is organisation & a bit of DIY savviness — there’s nobody about to help solve your technical problems, you just need to fix it and crack on”.
Now that she has graduated from Art School, Georgina’s studio has become a sacred space where she can typeset, print, book-bind and design, or in her own words; “make a mess and clean it up again”. Although small-scale, it is well equipped, providing her with a space to base her design practice from and produce print for both freelance and self-initiated projects.
