Fireater

Fireater is a letterpress studio based in an 18th century forge in rural Leicestershire. The studio was founded by Matt Leach, who has been collecting and establishing his collection of type for many years. The studio produces small edition wood type poster prints, business stationery, and wedding suites, and also hosts workshops and day courses.

Matt studied Typography at The London College of Printing in the late 90s and early 00s, where he found himself drawn to the letterpress studio where he could squirrel himself away and work on his typesetting skills. The studio had less woodtype, but metal type was in abundance, and provided Matt with the opportunity to experiment. After working in a completely different field, he then found himself on a day course at Typoretum, which progressed into full-time employment, where Justin Knopp taught Matt about the commercial side of letterpress printing. Matt states; “Fireater is the squashing together of a bit of this commercial printing but also the experimental, knowledge based and expressive form that I see it as today“.

The Fireater workshop boasts three presses; Gerhard the Geitz Platen press, Rod the Korrex, and John the Farley proofing press. Each one of the presses brings its own history to the studio, and also enables the workshop to tackle the majority of projects which come their way. Matt has amassed an interesting and varied selection of type with some super interesting and characterful cases, all of which also feeds into his personal work.
