POP Member Showcase: 9 Poster Projects

posted by POP Members March 17, 2020

From typographic examples, to informative Riso charts and limited edition gig posters, we’re proud to present a selection of poster projects from talented members of our community.

Fresh Lemon Print: Multiply Multiply is the study of process printing using the colours cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). “The way the colours interact and combine to create an almost endless colour palette is mind-blowing” explains Phil Gambrill, Fresh Lemon’s founder. After much experimentation, trial and error, and hours of ink mixing, Phil selected four sizes of the woodblock font, Helvetica, and their corresponding point sizes. He then printed cyan, magenta, and finally yellow, in an off-set configuration. This printing technique shows how overprinting transparent inks creates new colours and textures, resulting in an alluring, multi-coloured, vibrant poster.

Spiegelsaal: Gig Posters Spiegelsaal (Hall of Mirrors) is a design, illustration and screen print studio based in Hamburg, Germany. Founded by Torsten Jahnke and Jochen Mönig, they specialise in gig posters and branding for bands, musicians and festivals. They have recently worked for Beak, Blood Red Shoes, Mogwai, MGMT, Bryan Ferry, Flaming Lips, and Sleaford Mods. “Ever since the demise of the LP, these collector’s pieces, designed in all possible sizes, colours and styles, mostly hand pulled screen-prints, in limited print runs and not downloadable, are one of the few remaining possibilities for fans to physically worship music. You still can’t put your arms around a mp3, and you certainly can’t put it on your wall” declare the duo.

Poster Rex: Act Now! Screen Print Workshop at IADE Lisbon
We are unprepared for the danger our future holds. We face floods, wildfires, extreme weather, crop failure, mass displacement and the breakdown of society. The time for denial is over. It is time to act” state Lars Harmsen and Markus Lange of Poster Rex. It was this theme that formed the basis of a 2-day screen printing workshop held at the IADE Lisbon. At the event 15 students developed and printed protest posters on the given topic together with the poster collective.

BEAST Studio: Print Your Little Heart Out / Riso Colour Chart As a Riso printing studio, BEAST Studio are often asked how the different colours look on paper. In order to answer this, the team created a poster putting them all on display in a neat grid. To make the piece more engaging, they also designed a more poetic poster to go on the back side. The design consists of blobs of each colour overlapping one another, creating new colours and combinations, with the text “Print your little heart out!” set in bold negative typography on top. Printing a poster with a total of twenty-eight layers guarantees the occurrence of imperfections, which BEAST embraced when designing the poster. “This poster is a print about the act of printing, about the physical toll the feeder tires and ink takes on the paper as it passes through the machine, about turning individual parts—the paper, the ink, the spaces in-between—into a greater whole, and the joy of printing one’s little heart out”.

Malo Malo: The Ocean of Hundred Types These two posters by Malo Malo are based on The Ocean of Hundred Types; a French podcast about typography. Each island in the fictitious sea has received the name and characteristics of a proper font. There are examples of Comic Sans Reef, Didot Archipelago, Futura Iceberg or Helvetica Island. The goal of the typographic podcast is to democratise the field, and it is a poetic, accessible and funny way to discover typefaces. In each episode, they discover a new island, and at the same time a new font with its own identity. These Riso printed posters are visual summaries of the podcast and show a map of the islands that have already been discovered in the series.

The 4 colour posters were printed at a Chilean print shop called Fluor Natural, in collaboration with Mercadorama, a mexican company that produces official merch for bands.

Mina Braun: Yoga Poses Mina’s work is often inspired by mundane life, wanting to capture small moments of tranquillity and joy. She also enjoys depicting her characters in exaggerated and dynamic poses, thus influencing this series of posters depicting yoga poses. The series contains three different designs illustrating the poses Downward Facing Dog, Tree Pose and Headstand. The A3 posters were Risograph printed using two colours.
