Dana Bergstrom | Little Armoured One

Dana Bergstrom, aka Dryheat.Press’, lastest linocut release celebrates the Spring in the state she calls home; Texas.

“Spring in Texas means a lot of things depending on who you ask. Some may think of their allergies as here in Austin, we are the ‘Allergy Capital of the World’. Some may think of mosquitoes and bugs and rush to the store for repellent. Some may be thankful to be putting distance between themselves and the cold of winter. Some may be dreading the relentless heat of late summer quickly approaching. To me, and I’m sure many other Texans, spring means two things: Bluebonnet season and armadillos. Our state flower, a sea of blue, in full bloom almost everywhere you look. And one of our state animals; Yes, one. We have eight.”

Armadillo translates to “little armoured one”; a fitting name that inspired the title of Dana’s most recent linocut. These adorably ugly, little guys are found all over Texas and even though they are nocturnal, in the spring you are most likely to see them during the day, dawn, and dusk because of the fair weather. The winter is too cold so they become less active and as the heat of late spring, summer and fall approach you will see them less and less as they become fully nocturnal once again.

As depicted in Little Armoured One, the Texas Spring creates a small window of time when armadillos are able to be seen during the bright, sunshiny day, among the bluebonnets and wildflowers. This linocut block is roughly 9×12 inches and printed on standard sized, 11×14 inch, 200 gsm paper. Each print is individually inked and traditionally transferred using a hand press, barren and spoon. Dana used Speedball Professional Relief Ink in Supergraphic Black, and each print is hand painted with Inca Gold embellishments.
