Johannah Muriel is a London-based artist and printmaker whose abstract monotypes concern organic shapes and instinctual marks. Her mixed-media prints are the result of instinctive reactions to mainly natural references. She draws inspiration from nature, everyday life, and beauty found in decaying objects discarded by others. Johannah’s works document the unpremeditated journey of oil paint as impulsive mark making hits the paper.

Having studied Fashion Design at Kingston University, Johannah discovered printing seven years ago, through a social enterprise in Tower Hamlets. She was drawn to monotype printing because she felt it allowed her the freedom to produce her own original marks; each print, a one of a kind and impossible to repeat.

Inspired by textures found mainly in nature, once her prints have dried, Johannah adds detail with highlights of paint and subtle layers of varnish, creating texture from every angle. She also incorporates intricate hand embroidery to draw out features; it’s delicate application deliberately contrasts the freedom and spontaneity of the initial print, making each work highly unique and original.

Johannah has exhibited as part of group shows at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, National Original Print Exhibition at Bankside Gallery and Arundel Art Trail. Her work has also featured in The World of Interiors and GQ online.

Going forward, Johannah hopes to divide her time between her job as an Art & Design teacher for children with special educational needs, and her printmaking career. As with many artists, she has had limited access to her studio over the last six months and is looking forward to printing again, completing commissions, and creating a new body of work ready to exhibit next year.
