Kerry Day is a linocut printmaker, specialising in the reduction lino print method. Her work is predominantly based around her love of plants, drawing inspiration from her own massive collection of leafy greens, juicy succulents, and spiky cacti.

Originally from London, Kerry moved to Bath in 1994 to study a Ceramics degree at Bath Spa University College. Once completed, she decided to stay in the South West, and eventually moved to Bristol at the end of 1999, where she has been living and working eversince. In 2011, Kerry completed a MA in Multi-disciplinary Printmaking from the University of the West of England. During this time, she began teaching classes in Lino printing. “This was something I never thought I would ever do, but someone saw my potential and offered me regular classes at Spike Print Studio,” says the printmaker. Feeling “incredibly nervous”, she got stuck in and her confidence grew. Kerry now teaches regular lino printing classes and workshops at Bristol Folk House, and films online tutorials for her YouTube channel.

Kerry creates monochrome works as well as beautifully bold, bright, and colourful reduction lino prints. She combines colour blends and monoprinting layers within her reductions to help create depth and tone. Traditional Lino is her material of choice, particularly the cork/linseed oil/hessian backing variety for their environmental credibility. She also prefers oil based inks over water based, as she feels they are easier to work with and look better. Kerry sticks to an old school approach when designing; sketching out an idea on paper, or sometimes directly onto the Lino, over spending too much time at a screen. When asked what her inspiration is, she tells us; “Plants, Plants and more plants”. But it didn’t start this way. Kerry started her printmaking career screenprinting people, and after several years of printmaking and having a bit of a creative block she discovered linocut, and has been printing her plants and botanical pieces ever since.

Looking to the future, Kerry hopes to work on some larger scale pieces with multiple layers, and start teaching 1:1 workshops from home. Watch this space!
