The Burrow Prints

Steffi Möbius Ehrlich is the name behind The Burrow Prints. Founded in 2021, The Burrow Prints offers high-quality prints that are produced in limited editions using traditional printing techniques and sold internationally. Every single linoleum print is hand-originated and unique.

Steffi grew up in Brandenburg on the edge of a forest, surrounded by beautiful greenery and lakes. As a child, she was fascinated by nature. She describes; “I loved animals more than people, always working with the animals on my great-uncle’s farm during the holidays, and being out and about in the forest at home after school. I always wondered why so many animals were not tolerated by humans.” Steffi became a volunteer at the Krugpark Forest Conservation Centre, where she helped to rehabilitate animals including bats, birds, foxes, and fawns. “Despite all my love of animals, I couldn’t become a vet or an animal keeper, the suffering of the animals always tore me apart,” says the printmaker. Thus, Steffi devoted herself to her second hobby; illustration.

She studied Graphic Design as well as Communication Design and Media in the north of Germany at the Baltic Sea. Here, she was out and about in nature, spending her time away from work exploring the landscape. Today, Steffi is a graduate Diplom Designer and works in an agency in Berlin. However, missing the tactile nature of analogue craft, she decided to try out linocut printmaking alongside her illustration work. Currently, she remains an enthusiastic linocut printmaker, and lives again in the nature of Brandenburg.

“Our nature as well as man’s grievances and injustices towards it inspire my works,” comments Steffi. In her prints, the viewers’ attention is drawn to the protection and tolerance of flora and fauna. Framed in their own world of protective plants, her works often depict native animals, aesthetically and mysteriously designed. Delicate, detailed lines and the dark colours of the prints give Steffi’s designs a familiar, homely, and also melancholic atmosphere.

It is important to Steffi to act and support through her creative output. Therefore, for every lino print sold, a donation is made to organisations that protect animals.

All of her work is created from her studio in Brandenburg where Steffi designs new conceptual ideas with heart and soul. She explains; “Every design should not only be aesthetic, it should convey a message and emotions. Each design is also a part of me. A part of flora and fauna, to protect and accept these creatures.”

Steffi then carves with care and dedication; “For me, it is like mental health; a kind of meditation where I can forget all the problems and ills of the world for a moment. At this moment I am always happy to have taken the big step of founding The Burrow Prints, as linoleum printing and my dog and partner were an essential part of dealing with better depression.”

Last but not least, she then prints by hand. Steffi owns an A3 Woodzilla press, but her formats are now much larger. Her favourite thing to carve is A3 and A2 lino blocks, so each piece is printed by hand with love using a spoon and folding knife.
