Kelly Belter

Kelly Belter is an illustrator and printmaker based in Seoul, South Korea. Her work often features female figures with exaggerated features, colours, and overlapping shapes and texture.

After experimenting with Risograph, Kelly began screen printing in Korea with Miniprint Seoul. Since developing her love for the medium, she has gone on to work on larger and more ambitious projects; expanding the amount of layers as well as the scale and detail of each print. “Screen printing has had a major effect on my style and workflow, as predicting how colours will interact in the final print determine how I build each layer” explains the artist. As of 2019, Kelly has been focusing on printing on Hanji; a traditional Korean paper made out of mulberry bark.

Inspired by vintage illustration, 60s and 70s shape and colour, and Seoul’s vibrant urban jumble, Kelly favours female-driven illustrations with a touch of the strange or extraordinary. She is also influenced by whimsical or odd personal moments or stories, preferring to create images that allude to a larger story, narrative or wordplay. Most of her work is completed digitally; from sketching to finishing touches. Recently, she has been experimenting with creating certain layers with traditional pencils, pens or paint, and later scanning and digitally altering them.

As a freelance illustrator, Kelly enjoys focusing on the storytelling aspect of illustration. She is currently working on a book project, where she is creating silkscreen illustrations to accompany a story titled Tongs for Moonjung. The story revolves around a character who has to face her fear of insects in a creative way. Kelly is also working on a textile silkscreen series for her online shop; creating larger Hanji prints and making stained glass craft work in her spare time.
