Originally from Poland and now based in Manchester, UK, Danielle Rhoda is an illustrator, animator, and “maker of things“. Danielle’s work documents and catalogues “certain moments” she has witnessed, reflecting the people she sees in everyday life, her travels, and her surroundings.

Graduating from Manchester School of Art in 2018 with a BA(Hons) in Illustration with Animation, Danielle has since worked with clients including The New York Times, CNN Great Big Story, Ancestry, City of London, and C40 Cities. Alongside her commission work, she creates and designs greetings cards, prints, editorial, woodcuts, ceramics, animation, and textiles.
“I like to take a playful approach to drawing, often trying out various ways of application and communication” says Danielle. Her favourite pastime is observing and picking out little situations to draw later on. “If I go on a walk or sit on a train I sneakily take candid pictures of people I want to draw in the future. That way I can then capture certain colours or shapes if I wasn’t able to sketch them down right there and then”, describes the illustrator. Sometimes she also chooses to able draw from memory too, resulting in illustrations that have “more movement”.

Although the materials she uses change regularly due to her experimental nature, Danielle predominantly works with watercolour and pencils. Over the past year, she has been creating more in depth animation pieces, progressing from gifs to short works. When animating, Danielle draws by hand, thus combines digital techniques with analogue, much like she does with her illustration process.Danielle is currently working on an animation collaboration with writer and director Lilian Mehrel, as well as a new series project involving painting on canvas. She concludes; “I’m hoping to get more playful with my practice, try more materials, create more varied pieces, and go back to the ‘maker of things’ attitude by applying my illustrations to a range of products”.
