Hannah Brown is a designer and printmaker based between London and Leicester. Hannah studied a BA in Graphic Design and an MA in Printmaking at Camberwell College, London and after a creative hiatus she began screenprinting again in 2013. She discovered Bainbridge Print Studios in West Norwood, London, and started designing and printing repeat patterns onto sheets of cotton. Hannah shortly after set up Kvist (Swedish for Twig); a platform to showcase all her prints and ideas. She has now started to focus more on screen printing onto paper, utilising the facilities at the fantastic Leicester Print Studio.

“I’m completely mesmerised by the process of screenprinting and the results that can be achieved by layering colours over each other. I’m never 100% sure how the colours are going to turn out or how the layers will sit. It’s that element of surprise which can be pretty addictive.

Hannah is influenced by everything from old Olivetti posters, library record sleeves and fabric designs from the 1950s to 1970s. She has spent the last few years experimenting trying different techniques and designs; a process that she has found extremely exciting. This process of experimentation has resulted in themes of collage, texture, colour and play characterising her work.

Last year, Hannah created a design based on a Buchla synthesizer with the aim make a piece that could be turned into a pattern of some sort or continually reinterpreted into various forms. It was recently featured in Electronic Sound magazine and is one of her most popular prints. Hannah is working towards creating an aesthetic that can be translated into many forms and reproduced in different ways. For example, a piece may begin it’s journey as a screenprint but it could also be used as a fabric pattern, ceramic design or even floor tiles. She has also recently work on a record cover for the Gaijin Blues EP on the Shapes of Rhythm label which she found a real joy to work on, and is something she would love to do more of in the future.

“I want to do everything; create posters, seamless fabric designs, record sleeves, billboards and have exhibitions too. I’m working on a design at the moment which I would like to print really large scale, so that’ll keep my busy for the next few months” concludes Hannah.
